If you miss class: You have to get caught up. You are responsible to see me right away when you return to school even if you don't have Science that day. I will give you any handouts and homework. You will probably need to meet another student in your class to copy the notes. If you miss a quiz or test and don't see me as soon as you return to school, you could get ZERO for that evaluation. So don't let it go.
If you know you are going to be away: Tell me in advance. I will do my best to tell you what we are going to do in class and you will be better prepared. This is especially important if you are going to miss a quiz or test or something is due to be handed in. The best way to study: Re-read your notes many times and practice drawing all structures, reactions, graphs, diagrams. Be familiar with all labs, assignments, and homework you have done. Making your own study notes is fine but you are responsible for ALL the material covered, not just what you choose to put in your study notes. Make use of the glossary and index in the text. Read the actual information in the text and learn how to use the internet and this website. And remember, I am available for extra help most mornings, lunches, and after school. If you are having difficulties, face it head on and get help right away.
Also see the study tips on the Tips and Tricks page.
Type of questions on quizzes, tests, and exams: Multiple choice, true-false, written answers (definitions, explanations, essays), drawing structures, reactions, graphs and diagrams, labelling diagrams, etc. Materials required for course: Calculator, metric ruler, pen, pencil, eraser, 3-ring binder, lined paper, blank paper, text book. All materials must be brought every day. Special materials will be announced when needed. Format for submissions: Projects, formal lab reports, assignments should be neatly presented. Whenever possible, they should be done on the computer. There are computer facilities available in the library. Learn to use your wordprocessing software. Know how to use the TAB button to properly align text. Learn how to use subscript and superscript for typing chemical formulas. All titles and special headings should be underlined. Part of your grade for all submissions will be for neatness and presentation. Remember that the nicer your submissions are, the more you will enjoy studying them later for tests/quizzes/exam. A sample of proper format for most labs and assignments (unless otherwise indicated) is available on the Tips and Tricks page.
Safety in the lab: Food, drinks, CD players, etc. are not allowed in class. Safety glasses and hair tied back are often required. Failure to observe the rules will result in removal from the lab and ZERO for that evaluation. Final comments: Grade 9 Science is an important course not only for graduation from high school but for your understanding of future science courses. A studious and positive attitude is necessary for you to get the most out of your education. I am here to help you along and invite you to see me whenever you run into trouble. Don't be ashamed if you are having difficulties. If you take the time to work through them, you will be well on your way to a very successful experience at Central! I encourage you to participate in class discussions. If you don't participate, it is harder for me to know how well you are learning the material. By answering (and asking) questions, I get a better feel for where you are at and most of all ... I enjoy hearing from you. So speak up!
Best wishes for lots of success.
