QUALITATIVE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF MATTER
(Page 1)
Purpose: To observe some qualitative physical properties of matter.
Materials and Methods: ROTATE AROUND THE ROOM
- For a SOLID sample, use a spatula to obtain a small amount of the sample on a scrap piece of paper placed on a watch glass and record your observations for the first 6 properties in the table.
- Place some water in a graduated cylinder and carefully add the solid to the water and record your observations for the last 2 properties in the table.
- Wash the graduated cylinder and throw out the paper.
- For a LIQUID sample, leave the sample in the test tube and make your observations for the relevant properties in the table.
- Wash your hands when finished and return all equipment.
Observations: COMPLETE THE TABLE AND STAPLE IT TO THIS PAGE
Questions: ANSWER IN THE SPACE BELOW
- Which two samples seem to be the same/most similar?
- List the properties they share.
- Which property differs the most between all the samples and is thus most useful in distinguishing them from each other?
- Suggest at least 2 reasons why understanding the physical properties of a substance is beneficial.
- Use your text (chapter 5) to define these terms:
| Physical Property | Chemical Property |
