QUALITATIVE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF MATTER
(Page 1)

Purpose: To observe some qualitative physical properties of matter.

Materials and Methods: ROTATE AROUND THE ROOM

  1. For a SOLID sample, use a spatula to obtain a small amount of the sample on a scrap piece of paper placed on a watch glass and record your observations for the first 6 properties in the table.

  2. Place some water in a graduated cylinder and carefully add the solid to the water and record your observations for the last 2 properties in the table.

  3. Wash the graduated cylinder and throw out the paper.

  4. For a LIQUID sample, leave the sample in the test tube and make your observations for the relevant properties in the table.

  5. Wash your hands when finished and return all equipment.

Observations: COMPLETE THE TABLE AND STAPLE IT TO THIS PAGE

Questions: ANSWER IN THE SPACE BELOW

  1. Which two samples seem to be the same/most similar?

  2. List the properties they share.

  3. Which property differs the most between all the samples and is thus most useful in distinguishing them from each other?

  4. Suggest at least 2 reasons why understanding the physical properties of a substance is beneficial.

  5. Use your text (chapter 5) to define these terms:

    Physical Property
    Chemical Property
